St. Colmcilles Gaelic Football Club celebrate winning the 2010 League |
The Gaelic Footballers of St. Colmcilles Cardiff kicked off their new season by celebrating their achievements in 2010. For the first time in three years the club was crowned Gloucester league champions. At the recent dinner dance a crowd of over 130 well wishers and supporters were on hand to welcome the league cup back to Cardiff for the first time in three years.
The Dinner Dance was an opportunity for the club to thank players and management for their commitment and effort during 2010. As well as a presentation of league medals player awards were also handed out.
Mickey Brannigan from Co. Louth was awarded with the prestigious ‘Player of the Year’ award. In a night of double celebrations for the wee man from the wee county Brannigan was also selected as Club Captain for 2011.
Mark O’ Neill from Armagh was named as ‘New Comer of the Year’. O’Neill is credited with bringing ‘Ulster’ football on to the training ground and his ferocity and enthusiasm resulted in Mark been selected a Vice Captain for the 2011 season.
Club stalwart Martin Doyle from Wexford was named as ‘Club Man of the Year’, in recognition of his tireless organisation of training and matches during 2010. Thomas Murtagh, another Louth man was awarded ‘Most Improved Player of the Year’, while goal keeping legend Aidan Farrelly from Tipperary picked up the ‘Championship Player of the Year’ award.
St. Colmcilles Gaelic Football club has started training for the 2011 season. The club trains on a Tuesday and Thursday at the Gaelic Grounds in Cardiff. New players of all abilities are always welcome. The club are actively trying to recruit Welsh players.
Recent recruit Alasdair O’ Callaghan from Cyncoed is the latest Welsh player to become hooked on Gaelic Football. Alasdair, whose mother is from Co. Cork, has seen the game on television and has attended a few matches in Ireland joined in the club in March. O’ Callaghan says ‘I enjoy the speed and skill needed to play the game. It is also a good opportunity to improve my fitness and all the Irish lads are really friendly and helpful. I will defiantly be recommending Gaelic Football to my mates’.
This invite also extends to any ladies who might be interested in Gaelic Football. The recently establish Ladies Team trains at the Gaelic Grounds every Tuesday evening. |
