St. Colmcilles celebrate success of 2009 at their annual Dinner Dance |
Recently St. Colmcilles GAA hosted their annual Dinner Dance. A crowd of 120 well wishers and supporters joined players to celebrate the historic 2009 season and to kick start the 2010 season. For the first time in 3 years the club returned to their spiritual home of St. Peters for an evening of good food, music and entertainment.
Club Chaplin Father Mulvery kicked off proceedings by offering a prayer to the late Philip Mc Guinness who had passed away earlier in the week as a result of an injury sustained on the football field. Our thoughts are with his family and his Co Leitrim club side Mohill.
For the fourth year in a row St. Colmcilles had the John F Kennedy cup in their procession at their Dinner Dance and the night provided an opportunity to hand out championship medals and awards from the preceding season.
Alan Rowley, from Leitrim, who was drafted in as an emergency midfielder, has been hailed as the engine room of the team, won the Player of the Year Award, for his tireless energy and work rate on the pitch.
Ollie Carthery, from Armagh, won the award for Championship Player of the Year. Veteran Carthey provided solid performances throughout the Championship and provided a springboard for many vital Colmcille scores. Ollie’s parents were in attendance on the night and his father (himself a highly decorated footballer) presented the award.
Shane Galvin, from Cork, won the award for Most Improved Player. Shane was the cornerstone of the Colmcilles defence all year. Having worked hard on the training field he produced a number of performances that even the fittest most determine attackers found difficult to break down.
Mickey Brannigan, from Leitrim, won the award for New Comer of the Year. In the short time Mickey has been with the club he has made the corner back position his own. His speed, skill and work rate would be welcomed by any club and we are lucky that he has found his way to Cardiff.
Marty Dolan, from Fermanagh, won the Club Man of the Year Award. Traditionally this award goes to the individual who has worked hard to promote and sustain the club in all areas, be that on the field or during Committee meetings.
Joe Sullivan, from Kerry via Birmingham received a special award to mark his time with the club. Joe who sets sail for Australia will be sadly missed by everyone involved at the club. Sullivan will never be the most skilful player to pull on a St. Colmcilles jersey, however, if everyone put in the same effort and had the same attitude as Birmingham Joe, the club would be challenging for awards at an all British level. Joe, your an example to us all and a great character – all the best.
St. Colmcilles would like to take this opportunity to thank their sponsors O'Neill's for all the post match catering and Conor and Cerie Mc Closkey of CM Utilities for their generous and unstinting support over many years.
St. Colmcilles welcome new players of all ages and abilities.

Hard-fought success in league opener for the Colmcilles |
St. Colmcilles Gaelic Football Club kicked off their league campaign with a hard fought win over league newcomers Plymouth Parnells at the Gaelic Grounds in Cardiff.
Although the Cardiff side were almost at full strength the team from the south coast applied serious pressure during the opening exchanges. St. Colmcilles settled a little quicker thanks to a well taken goal from their new captain Ollie Cathey.
During the first half both sides played some really good flowing football, St. Colmcille debutant Kevin Smyth marshalled midfield, while another newcomer David Griffin kept the scoreboard ticking over for the home side.
At the start of the second half the Plymouth side proved they did not travel to Cardiff for some sightseeing and quickly rattled over 4 points without reply to remain in contention. Throughout the rest of the game the teams exchanged points in what proved to be a very hard fought spirited game.
In the end it was the experience of the Cardiff side that proved to be the difference. New vice Captain Martin Dolye steadied Cardiff in defence, while Joe Sullivan, Shane Hyland and Baz Collins continued to convert hard fought possession into vital scores.
On Sunday 18th April St. Colmcilles Cardiff host the league champions, St. Nicks from Bristol.
The Cardiff side will be training as usual at the Gaelic Grounds just off Sanatorium Road on Tuesday and Thursday evening. Training starts at 6.30 and newcomers are always welcome. For more information please visit www.cardiffgaa.org.uk |
